Uh Oh

I'm not able to do what I used to be able to do... I am realizing this. This past weekend at work my body decided that it would just MAKE me stop to rest. If I were having a conversation with my body this past weekend, it would have gone something like this...

Me: "Hey Body... we need to go to work for a 4th day in a row"

My Body: "Ya know, Edith, I REALLY don't think that's a good idea. You've worked two 12-hour shifts in a row and you came in Saturday... me and the baby need a rest."

Me: "Well, I am on call and if I get called in I have to go cause it would be an emergency case!"

My body: "You didn't sleep very well last night though, and you have been having those pains in your back, abdomen, and special place - that, by the way, no one tells you about until it's too late."

Me: "Hi. I am dumb. I am going to ignore you because I think I am Super woman!"

I got called in and short version... I over did it. I didn't drink enough water. I didn't get a break for 3 1/2 hours because I was the only nurse there. By the end of the case I rolled my patient into recovery and RAN to the bathroom. After I emptied my bladder the pains began.

I could not walk, literally. I sat down for a while, it just got worse. My supervisor comes in and says,
"Oh... Dr. Poopy Pants just called, he has a hip to do. Also, Dr. Whoopity Doo called we have a woman with an embolus in her arm, you need to go do that case now."

Me: BAWLING MY HEAD OFF "I can't move! I need a break! I can't walk."

Thankfully, another nurse had been called in due to the immense number of cases being added to the board and she took over for me for a minute so I could take a break.

All in all, the pain stayed. My boss wanted to take me to the ER but instead settled for me calling my OB doctors answering service to see what they wanted me to do. They wanted me to go to the ER at the hospital where we are having the baby. Paul came to get me and took me down his car in a wheelchair. The pain was subsiding so we decided that since I had no blood, no wierd stuff, and I was feeling better that we would put off going to the ER so we could pay $100 for some one to tell us to go home and put my feet up, drink water, and rest.

I layed around all day. I layed around all day yesterday. Today is my day off... I am feeling SO MUCH BETTER!!

Lesson learned: I am NOT super woman. I am a soon to be mother who needs to take better care of herself and her Madeline. It takes a lot out of you to grow a person! I'm talking to my boss tomorrow about working every-other-day and lightening my load.

P.S. Madeline is moving! Every day I feel her. Mostly in the morning and at night. I can't wait for Paul to feel it.

I hope you are taking it easy! Get lots of rest and hang in there. It is SO cool to feel the baby moving isn't it???
