The Secret Squeeze

Marriage is fun. Especially when you are married to someone who makes your life a trillion-bazillion percent better. Someone who is loving and handsome and funny and who takes care of you. Part of a fun marriage is having little memories and little inside jokes or secrets you can share.

Sometime in the first part of our marriage there was an evening when Paul and me were laying in bed talking and we came up with, what I thought was, our "secret squeeze". The secret squeeze is a non-verbal way of telling someone you love them. It's simple... squeeze the persons hand three times in a row.

So for almost 8 years now, every once in a while, I will squeeze Paul's hand. He usually squeezes my hand right back three or four times. I always assumed the three squeezes meant "I love you" and the four squeezes meant "I love you too."

I was wrong. We were talking about it the other day and I found out that this whole time Paul had no idea I was telling him that I loved him when I squoze his hand or his arm or his leg. So for 8 years I have been thinking we had this cool little inside thing going on... and we didn't. Well, at least on one side.

So, make sure, if you have any inside jokes with your spouse or boyfriend or friend, that it's not just inside your head. Then, in eight years or so, you won't feel like a total dork.

P.S. Now he knows what it means when I squeeze him. *smile*
