2012 So Far: Abigail Turned ONE

I love that one of my children has a birthday on the first day of the year.  Paul and I never really celebrated the New Year until now. It was always,

At around 8:00pm -
"Oh, it's New Years Eve. Happy New Year!"
"Happy New Year to you!"
*kiss*
"G'night."
"G'night."

And then off to dream land, with a hope in our hearts that there won't be some stupid kid who thinks it would be fun to run around the neighborhood banging his Mom's pans.

But now - because our little A has her birthday on New Years - it's a pretty big deal.  And I guess, in a way, I should recognize it a little more.  New anything is so nice. I love how people look at New Years as a way to start over and be better.  I try to look at each day like that.

My little A makes me better. Every day she reminds me of what kind of person I want to be, and she does it with an adorability that just makes you want to squeal with excitement.

On A's actual birthday morning we went to the park. A loves to play in the sand, go down the slide, and swing in the baby swing.

I ordered a bunch of balloons from the balloon lady here on camp and made Abigail a homemade cake and some cupcakes.

We had a yummy birthday dinnrt of breaded chicken, grapes, cucumbers, and noodles - A's favorites. We also invited some good friends of ours over to have cupcakes and ice cream.

Abs didn't show much of an interest in her cake. She took a couple of tiny swipes of the frosting. She even offered me a taste - she's sweet that way - always sharing.

Near the end of her first cake event, she discovered how fun it was to smack the cake. She had a pretty good time doing that.

Ever since Abs could move, she has had a fascination with chairs. She especially loves her sister M's "big sister" chair that we got from Pottery Barn Kids. So, it was a no brainer to buy her a chair of her own for her birthday.

The girls had a great time playing with the huge box her chair came it. In all we used it as a boat, a rocket ship, and finally, a house. It lasted about a week. The chairs have really been a great success. The girls climb on them, make forts out of them, slide them together to make a boat, and of course, sit on them.

Happy Birthday Nate!

Today is my brother Nate's birthday.  He's a good, hard-working man; an amazing husband and father; and he loves and takes care of his family and friends.  I'm really happy he's a member of my family. Love you Nate!

Momma's B-Day

Today is my Momma's birthday.  How do I write what I feel about this woman?  I just don't believe there are words that can properly express the love and admiration I have for her. She is my best friend and loves me unconditionally - like a mom should love her children.  She gives the best hugs.  She always, ALWAYS knows what to say.  She is an amazing cook! She has a talent and a gift to heal others.  She is the mother of all mothers!

Happy Birthday to you Momma!  I love you forever!

Abby New Year!

Abigail Lily
Born: January 1st, 2011 (1/1/11)
 9:40 pm
8 lbs. 6 oz.
21 inches long

December 30th, 2010: I had very vague, non-threatening, and constant thigh, lower back, and abdominal cramping all day long. They were nothing timeable and very tolerable so I just took it easy and lived with it as we continued our lives.  We took Madeline to Kings Road to play at the park and run around in the field.  We got the most awesome parking spot right in front of the entrance gate to the field. There were too many people there so I passed on doing squats across the field as I had originally planned to help possibly bring labor on.  Just picture it - a chubby pregnant lady doing walking squats across a large grassy field with at least 50 Saudi men and women dressed in their modest best grazing on blankets and picnicing as their children play and frolick about.

December 31st, 2010: Contractions become noticeable and timeable, but they are all over the place.  Eight minutes apart here, 11 minutes apart there, an hour goes by with nothing, then 6 minutes.  Interesting, but to unpredictable and not enough to "rock the boat."

They say "don't eat if you feel like you are going into labor!!" But "THEY" haven't tasted the filet steak with pepper cream sauce that Paul is making for New Year's Eve dinner - I'm eatin'!!

Movie night with the family.  Madeline falls asleep next to me on the couch and I look at her and stroke her hair as I begin to sob heavily, realizing our time alone, "just us," will soon be over.  She has been an amazing first kid and I am so in love with her.  How will this all affect her? How will things change? Will she be okay? So many worries.... but a feeling of peace and a realization that everything happens for a reason, God loves me and blesses me, and that there is nothing negative about this experiences washes over me.  More tears because THAT realization is deep and so surreal.

Bedtime: Contractions noticeable and timeable - exactly 8 minutes apart!! Excitement!! But then I lay down and they completely disappear except for when I move or walk around.  Baby Abigail is more active than she has ever been and kicks me in the throat.

January 1st, 2011 (1/1/11):  No extra tax break this year.  We are excited and hopeful Abigail will be born today because it's such a COOL birthday! What a way to start the year.
Contractions are timeable, but too far apart at 8 - 10 minutes for most of the day. That last one was 11 minutes apart.... crap!  Still, I am hopeful something will happen today!

Lose the plug (Bet you wanted to know that) and see pink! We see pink when we go potty!  Ewww.  Have to call my Mom.

Pink stops.  Hope is dwindling.

Hmm... that last contraction was actually quite painful.  Sort of had to stop what I was doing and hold still while it finished. This goes on for several hours.  Mean, grouchy Edith comes out and isn't very patient.  I snap at Paul for moving his arm and accidentally bumping into my belly.  Then I snap at him again for asking me what I want for dinner - how dare he be so nice!!!
I walk around panicking for a while and finally make a decision.  I tell Paul to stop making dinner (rice cooking, raw chicken out and ready to be cooked) - let's go get checked out.  We call our dear friends who have offered to watch Madeline and tell them "we're goin' in for a check!"

Emotions are still running high.  We get our bags and jackets (SHOOOOOT I forgot my pillow and notepad) and then take Madeline to her pal Kiersten's house.

"Want to go to Kiersten's house Madeline?" I ask.

"Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyy!" she yells.

As soon as she is out of her carseat she bolts for the door.  No "good bye Mommy" or "I love you Mommy." I start to cry.  Paul tells Madeline to come hug me.  She runs over, and as I take a whiff of her berry flavored hair and soak in her sweet aura she whispers, "Yuv you Mommy, bye bye."

TEARS.

Amazing super cool and awesome friend, Kasondra, comes running out to hug me and say good luck.... more TEARS.

And we're off!

5:15 pm - Paul drops me off at the entrance to the ER and goes to park the car.  I waddle in and wait patiently as the man at the front desk finishes his phone conversation.  He kindly interrupts his friend, "Can I help you?" I smile, "I think I'm in labor." Two other people poke their heads out from behind a wall and smile at me for a good 30 seconds.  I smile back. They continue to look at me. Awkward silence occurs.  They finally come walking toward me and grab a wheelchair to take me upstairs to be examined (and probably sent home).

A very nice woman gives me a gown to change into and then, after I am changed, asks me to lay down so she can monitor my contractions. "How far apart are the contractions?" she asks.

"Oh they're about 5, 6 minutes apart." I lied. They were only 8 last I checked, but I did do a quick prayer and promise never to be bad ever again if they would get closer.

The monitoring begins... They're about 5 MINUTES APART NOW! Yes!  But after an exam it is discovered I am only 2 cm dilated and 75% effaced.  The nice lady decides to admit me anyway stating it is only because they are consistently 5 minutes apart - I WILL NEVER BE BAD EVER AGAIN!

Admitted 6:00-ish pm.  We talk with the nurse, make a call to our friends to let them know we were admitted and then I start walking the halls.  The contractions get even stronger and I have to sit down.  We decide it would probably be a good time for Paul to go get something to eat because we realize - at only 2 centimeters - it may be a really long night.

SHIFT change.  The new nurse is not so friendly.  I later realize that she IS friendly she was just annoyed that we were admitted because now it will probably be a long night and we will have to "do something" (start pitocin) in her eyes to make things progress faster.  As I get to know her, I realize she is in a huge hurry for some reason.  Why is she in such a hurry?  Am I the only labor of the night and she was hoping not to have to do any cases tonight so she could read the rest of that romance novel she can't seem to put down? I can't help but be annoyed at this.  I am excited to let things take their course naturally... and then, excited for that delicious, scrumdiddleeuptious epidural and the hours of pain free contractions and talking with Paul and planning our retirement, etc. etc.

While Paul is gone getting some food I listen to some music on my iPod, but it's hard to relax with the nurse midwife sitting there filling out paperwork and staring at me.  Time goes by... contractions happen.  According to me - being the one feeling the contractions, which I think is a good source of info. - they are pretty strong.  Much more annoying and painful than regular period cramps (And I grew up having some pretty painful ones) but the nurse keeps telling me that they are still just "very mild contractions" and the monitor isn't even picking some of them up.  Paul and I both think the same thing and verbally state, "is it possible your little fetal monitor belt is too loose? not working well? or that the fact that I have a little chub cushioning the blow may absorb some of the severity?"

8:00 pm:  The OB doctor comes in for a look.  I'm now dilated to a 3-4 and about 85% effaced.  They decide to break my water BEFORE the anesthesiologist comes to give me that lovely epidural.  The one you are supposed to be able to have when you make it to 3 cm.

Between 8-9:00 pm: Contractions are getting much stronger, much closer, and I am not having a good time.  I AM NOT HAVING A GOOD TIME.  I am rolling around, hugging the bed rail, squeezing Paul.

9:00 pm: Anesthesiologist makes an appearance.  Talks a lot about how long he has been an anesthesiologist, the risks, etc., I sign consent, blah blah blah.  Ten or 11 really strong contractions later (I am light headed, writhing in pain, moaning), he has the catheter in, but he is not sure if it is really in... we may need to re-do it... wait... he's taping it to my back... OH, so it is in then? Umm, yeah, it's in (he says in an "I think" tone).  Is it possible we can be more confident about this?  I am not a huge fan of pain.  Yes. it's definitely in (still in an "I think" tone). He adds the medicine to the epidural - no change on the left side.  The right side gets warm and I can't feel the contractions for about 10 minutes, but the left side is still full of life and feeling.  The contractions seem as if they are now on top of each other with no breaks inbetween.  The anesthesiologist says, "give it some time to work. Lay on your left side to help the medicine over."  Basically tells us not to call him for AT LEAST 30 minutes, and leaves.  Feeling returns to the right side... GREAT!

9:25 pm: I feel like I should push.  So the midwife does a quick check - " Yep! It's time to push! You're fully dilated. At this point you cannot get an epidural anyway... blah blah blah BLAH!!!"   I'm thinking - "so you still think I should have been sent home huh?!!" They gave Paul a mask and a can of gas and told him to put it on my face when I could feel pain.  I left the mask on pretty much the entire time except for when I was pushing.  I was breathing in the gas so much that I became REALLY dizzy.  I was breathing really hard and became very light headed.

Push 1 - nothing
Push 2 - half the head was out
Push 3 - entire head out
Push 4, 5, 6 and with a little help/pulling - shoulders and rest of Abby.

9:40 pm: Official birth time and pain vanishes! Halelujah!

Nurse comment: "Next time you have a baby come in as soon as you feel contractions."  HA!

No tears or episiotomy, minimal swelling, an expected discomfort and weakness - but I am healing nicely and this experience physically, compared to the birth of Madeline, was a a very pleasant one.  I felt like super woman!!

Abigail is a very beautiful, quiet baby.  She only cries when she is hungry and, even then, that is after several minutes of wiggling around to give me a chance to notice she needs something.  Even the pediatrician commented on how quiet her cry is during her exam - "That's all you've got eh?" he kept saying.  She likes to look around and just stare at everything, and she already smiles when her momma talks to her.

Abigail and Madeline are getting along well.  The expected confusion is there for Madeline, and she has shown some discomfort when I nurse the baby, but she is accepting it and often talks with Abigail and comforts her when she cries.  There have been several group hug sessions -which I love! Madeline loves to hold her little sister.

I am in love with my girls, my husband, and my life! We are very, very blessed and so excited for this new year!

Happy Birthday!

Today is my sister Heidi's birthday. I have looked through all of my pictures, and I can't seem to find a picture of just her and I together. This saddens me, so I am making it a point to get several next time I see her. This is a picture of me with both of my beautiful sisters at my wedding (Heidi left, Amber right).

I love you Heidi!

I am glad you were born and I hope you have a wonderful birthday today!!

Party!

Yesterday we had Madeline's birthday party. It was a great party, and I think those who were able to make it had a good time. Thank you to my sweet husband, Paul, and to his Mom and Dad and Sister and Brother-in-law... without you guys I wouldn't have been able to pull it off. I am SO grateful to you!

Created with flickr slideshow.

The day started early for me. I was up at 4:00 am to make frosting and decorate the cake and cupcakes. I had to run to Kroger at 5:30 in the morning in my curlers to get more food coloring (boy there are some weirdo's at the store in the morning). If you are ever planning on making red cupcakes or a red cake of any kind, make sure you have enough food coloring. I ended up using about 2 full bottles to get the color I wanted. I wasn't quite sure how I was going to decorate Madeline's cake so I eventually just made an Elmo on it and slapped on some blue border. She obliterated that thing!

I also had to finish decorating. I quickly strung some streamers around the pillars, blew up some balloons, and it turned out pretty good.

One o'clock came fast and guests started arriving. We had some food and visited for a while and then I had the kids and babies gather to play pin the nose on the Elmo. That was fun since most of the kids were too young for such a game. Mostly moms had to hold their kids or the one's who could do it themselves couldn't help but peak. Maybe not the best game for tiny people, but it was fun.

After the game we had Madeline open her presents. She got so many awesome toys and books and some of the cutest clothes. I can't wait for her to wear them.

After presents it was time to watch the baby eat her cake. At first she was hesitant, but as soon as she tasted that frosting so was all for it. She had a moment of irritation because she doesn't really like to be TOO messy, just a little messy, but then she got right back into destroying the cake. I think she make actually ate 1/20 of it.

After a quick bath, it was back to playing with toys, eating, visiting, and having fun.

We had a great time, and by the end of it all Madeline was so pooped she fell asleep mid-bite of some delicious veggies... what a coincidence. hmm.

Included in the slideshow are some pictures from Madeline's actual birthday (9-10-09) and a couple of her playing in her tutu.

Madeline's Monthly Message: Month 12

Dear Madeline,
Today you are 12 months old, a.k.a. ONE YEAR old.

Happy Birthday!! And congratulations on your first successful journey around the sun!

It's hard to imagine that one year ago today I was in the hospital in labor for 14 hours, 49 minutes, when you finally made an appearance. It wasn't a bad experience. I was so happy that you were finally coming I was in pretty high spirits all day, and when you looked at me... ohh baby the love.

My love for you, my little love bug, angel, snickerdoodle, cannot be contained in my body... I think of you and I can't believe how blessed I am. It often brings a tear to my eye because my soul is bursting... I can't believe it! What could I have possibly done before this life to be the one chosen to be your mother?? It had to be something pretty unbelievably amazing!

New this month... you aren't quite walking on your own, but you will hold one of our hands and take steps sometimes. You still push your stroller with great independence and pride. You stand for long periods of time holding onto nothing... your balance is very good. It's just going to happen when you are ready and we are all for that. You crawl like a maniac all over the place. You also enjoy climbing. You climb the stairs at any chance you get... you are under constant supervision so you haven't been able to do it on your own yet - hopefully this never happens. We are getting another gate for the stairs tomorrow. You also enjoy climbing on the elliptical upstairs, and you have attempted several times, unsuccessfully, to climb out of your playard in the TV room. I'm sure you will soon conquer this obstacle. You have so much energy that if we don't let you walk and crawl and climb most of the day, you are up until very late at night. It is a poor man who has to be in your path after being in the carseat or stroller all day.

You and your Dad have an extremely special bond. You wait for him at the door by the garage every day when I tell you he is on his way home. When he does finally get home you jump and dance and smile and laugh and when he picks you up all you want to do is be with him. He walks with you a lot and reads to you... he's your bud, and I love it. I love that you have that relationship with him. It's what I always wanted for my babies. Yes, you are a Daddy's girl... but you are still your Momma's baby, and I love that.

Changing your diaper is an Olympic event. You immediately flip over onto your belly and try over and over to stand up. If we even try to attempt to stop you and reposition you, you begin throwing everything you can get your hands on. I have become quite skilled at putting diapers on you while you are standing up or if you are not facing me. I'd let you go free with nothing on but I just can't fathom cleaning up the poop and pee on the carpet. I don't want to do it.

You are a good eater most of the time. Your favorites now-a-days are chicken (big time), pears, watermelon, nectarine, peach, grapes, baby goldfish crackers, and yogurt drops. You also enjoy papertowels, wet wipes, books, and dryer lint... though these are not usually on the menu. So you get a pretty wide array of vitamins and minerals. You still throw a lot of stuff on the ground, and try to hide your food in your diaper or in a nearby drawer you can successfully pull open, but you are also doing well with feeding yourself. You know which end is the correct end of the spoon now and can dip it in the bowl properly and then put the food in your mouth. It's quite a mess and the food sometimes flips over your head onto the floor or into your hair. The point is you are getting it and it is very fun to watch you grasp different concepts.

You love to talk and sing. You still talk a lot of baby jibberish but you can say words. Some common ones are dih-dih (kitty), Dah! (Daddy), Momma (Momma), boo (blue), meh-mo (Elmo), and BAH! (the word you use for everything else, and when you get sick of me asking you if you can say words). When you talk to kitty, you talk to her in a high-pitched voice (like I do). You also talk in a high-pitched, gentle voice to all of your stuffed friends and dollies. It is the cutest thing.

You sing to the radio and you sing along with your Elmo movie now. I love that you want to sing. You also dance. You also can't help but shake your hips and head in a very rhythmic, almost violently active manner, when you hear music. You even dance when you hear any sort of rhythm... like if we are reading you a poem or something. I tell people all the time that music is in your soul... I truly believe it. Music will always be a big part of your life.

We are teaching you to love your Mother Earth. Every time we leave a room you point at the light switch and if something is on, you turn it off. You are also very good at putting things in the garbage. You also enjoy eating grass and dirt.

You've been out a lot this month. We went to the Pink Palace museum as a family. You slept through most of that. We went to the zoo with Brooke and her momma, and to the park near our house. We also went to Shelby Farms Park together as a family for the first time. We go on walks more because it is getting cooler. You love being outside so I am trying to incorporate it more into our day.

You are a very affectionate little person. You hug and kiss me and your dad regularly. You also love to hug kitty. You are getting much better at petting her. She still runs when you come toward her, but only sometimes, which is a huge improvement over last month. You love to cuddle with and hug your stuffed animals and dolls.

You are also very friendly. You wave at everyone - especially other little children and babies. When you aren't sure if you should wave or not you do what I like to call a "contained wave." You wave with one hand while holding it with the other hand as if you are holding the waving hand back or something.

Naptime. It's sometimes easy... sometimes you are so tired you just lay down and you are out. Those times are rare. You get really tired... but you don't like to nap. So sometimes it's a struggle. You've mastered the fake cry. You've also learned that if you scream as if someone is ripping your arms off or you have been set on fire, you will get attention.

You understand the sign (in sign language) for "milk" and "bath". All the other signs you haven't seemed to care too much about.

You still love reading. You love to turn pages mostly. If we don't read fast enough you will let us know it's time to turn the page. Of course, like I said before, some books are delicious to you... literally. Specifically a small cardboard book from your Grandma Suzy called "Alligator and Friends A to E". Of course, now the cover reads, "d Friends A to E".

You love to comb and brush my hair. You also like to put blush on my cheeks for me... though at times it ends up on my chin or forehead... it will totally be the style when you are older because you are a trendsetter.

All of my life I have wanted to be a mother. From the time I was very little and enjoyed playing with my dolls and kitties to the time I finally met your father... having a baby has been this constant, almost gnawing, thought in my head. So bad, sometimes I had an actual, physical ache in my chest. When you were born Madeline, I finally knew why. I finally knew that the reason I was aching and thinking about you so much was because I MISSED you! I feel like I have known you forever. I MISSED our friendship, your smile... oh the joy I felt, holding you in my arms for the first time - FINALLY after waiting for what felt like an eternity (30 1/2 years!) I felt an immediate connection with you, and this first year of your life has been the happiest time of my life.

I love you so much!!
Love,

Momma

The Birth Of A Mega Magnificent Man

On August 7th, Paul had his 32nd birthday. He had the day off from work, so we were able to have him with us the whole day! I decorated the "formal" dining room... I sort of stunk at picture taking for some reason. You can't see it, but I also decorated Paul's chair and there was a bunch of balloons hanging from the light in the center of the room...
Oh, and can I just say, I HATE streamer paper. I HATE it. I spent way to much time trying to twist that stuff only to have it break form on me and mess up the whole twisted twirl. I totally made those streamer paper flowers though. Pretty nice, eh?

Madeline colored a poster for her Dad... You see how that damn streamer paper is all weird and twisted in a stupid way on the right side of that poster? Ugh!

We decided to eat in the formal dining room for each meal since it was such a special day. Believe it or not, we have almost lived in our house 2 years (this December) and we have NEVER eaten a meal in the formal dining room. Are two dining rooms REALLY necessary? I guess there could be that one day someday when Paul invites his boss to dinner and I have to wear my Betty Crocker apron and then after dinner the men will escape to the library to smoke cigars and discuss politics (wait... where was I?) So, I decided it was finally time... to eat in that room. Paul really wants to turn that room into an office or something... which isn't a bad idea. It would make a nice office. I'm just not sure what to do with the nice table and 8 chairs we have in there.

So we had breakfast. After breakfast Paul opened his presents. Unfortunately none of them were much of a surprise because I asked him what he wanted and just got it. Most of the time I like to surprise people. I just love the look on someone's face when they are surprised. But I usually spoil the surprise because the anticipation of it just kills me. This year Paul got money (who doesn't like THAT present?), the last 4 Harry Potter Books (first editions), a rice cooker/vegetable steamer, a tripod stand for our cameras, some super dark chocolate truffles, and several lovely cards.

Our friends Misty and Brooke joined us for a delicious birthday dinner of filet, cheesy mashed potatoes, and super sweet corn, with salad. This year Paul asked for a pint of Ben & Jerry's Super Fudge Chunk ice cream instead of a cake. He usually gets an ice cream cake - he's never been a real fan of cake in general - but he just wanted the chunk this time. The birthday boy gets what he wants!
It was a great day, I know Mads was sad to see it end...

I hope Paul had a nice birthday. We love him so, so, so, so, so very much, and we are SO glad he is a part of our lives.

Happy Birthday Momma

Easter Sunday I was taking a 3-hour nap with my little family (all of us - me, Paul, Madeline, and the kitty - slept for 3 hours straight, it was awesome!!), and I woke up to an awesome rainstorm. Words immediately filled my head - almost as if someone was putting them in my mind for me - so I quickly grabbed a notepad and began writing them down.

A poem for my momma - Susan - Happy Birthday Mom. I love you!

But When It Rains
By: E.A.M., Copyright 2009.

In the Springtime
when it's warm
and the flowers are in bloom,
I sit alone and stare,
out the window in my room.
I imagine flowering lilac trees with pretty purple pets.
Memories of you flood my mind that I will not forget.

But when it rains,
oh the joy,
when I hear the booms of thunder
in the sky,
I'm not scared,
but excited my dear mother, this is why...
It is YOU I am remembering
when I'm thinking of the rain.
Like a hug,
an embrace,
that erases all the pain.

In September when the shaking leaves turn red and orange, and gold,
I remember how you love them,
and no matter how old,
I'm reminded of the bond between a mother and her dot,
and the distance in between us
can quickly be forgot.

But when it rains,
and the sun is hidden by the darkening cloud,
I remember how you love me,
and you say I make you proud.
I'm reminded of our talks and the way you make things better,
and my brown eyes,
like the clouds,
usually get wetter.

In the summer when it's humid,
and the heat is burning hot,
I remember you'd be happy in my A/C -
that's the spot.
And I dream,
of a time
when you're sitting here with me.
When I'll see and hear your laughter
and I'll share my family.

But when it rains
and the raindrops start to fall from up above
I'm reminded of your kindness,
of your sacrifice,
and love.
I remember special moments -
when it was just you and me,
listening to the rain and thunder -
A mom like you I'll be.

In the winter,
when the air
is so cold you cannot breath it.
I remember building snowmen
just so you, my mom, could see it.
If you were happy for a minute
my life's purpose felt fulfilled.
How I would just hug you
If your presence could be willed.

But when it rains
there's a freshness that reminds me of my childhood.
Leaning out your bedroom window,
breathing scents that were oh soo good.
I'm reminded of our closeness,
and your smile - yes it's true.
I'm reminded of you every day.

But when it rains...
I always think of you.

Birthdays and Baby Preparation

Last week was a busy week! Paul had a birthday on Thursday. He turned 31. I got him a basketball hoop as his gift from me so he could have a fun form of exercise to participate in. He loves to "shoot hoops". Hopefully after the baby comes I will be able to shoot some hoops with him. We have a pretty nice sized driveway so it should be fun. I'll take some pictures of the hoop - maybe get some action photos of Paul - once we get it put together. It's a really nice hoop.

Every year Paul turns another year older, I try to do something special for him. I believe that no matter how old you become, you should ALWAYS have a birthday party with ridiculous hats and balloons and cake. So, every year I make Paul wear a hat of some form. This year just so he didn't feel too dopey, I had kitty join in the fun too. She had a great time. See!!

Here's Paul eating breakfast with his shiny gold birthday king hat on.

Here's kitty - she is a party animal!
Paul loves ice cream cake from Dairy Queen
so that's what we got him.
Aww, a family photo

This past week we also finally got our baby furniture - our crib and changing table - for Madeline. It only took about a week for it to come in, and then our awesome friends Misty and Michael drove down with us in their truck and helped us get it home (Thank you so much you guys!!).
Michael also helped Paul move our awkward beast of an elliptical up our steep stairs to the rec room, which was really scary to watch, AND helped move the crib and dresser boxes inside. Lots of lifting! I was just glad to know that I have access to some pretty great general surgeons in case hernia repair was in store.

Kitty had a great time playing with the gigantic boxes the crib came in.

This fake bird is about to be toast...

Here's the crib!! I love it so much! By the way, Michael, it only took Paul 1 hour 33 minutes to put the crib and changing table together. That INCLUDES the several times I bothered him to make him drink water, ask him questions, put a breath right strip on his nose (he was stuffy), and kill a couple spiders. Pretty good, eh?
