Saturday morning Paul and I awoke to a lovely surprise... our hot water heater wasn't working. We immediately informed the front office of our apartment complex, and in the meantime, chose other means to get clean for the day.I washed my hair by leaning over the bathtub, and finished off with a sponge bath at the bathroom sink. I've experienced "ice-head" before, washing my hair in mountain water at girls camp, so it wasn't too bad. Paul boiled a couple large pots of water and took a bath.
It being a weekend, and a broken water heater not being seen as an "EMERGENCY", I didn't expect to see a maintenance man until at least Monday. So this morning, I took a COLD SHOWER.
Holy Minestroni-on-rye-with-a-dill-pickle-on-the-side, was it cold!!!!!
The actual act of showering in cold water isn't very fun, but the way I felt AFTER the shower was pretty great! My entire body felt alive and refreshed! So, I decided to do a little research on cold showers. Just what effect do they actually have on the body?? Are they good for you???
According to this website, cold showers have the following positive effects on the body:
*Brings blood to the capillaries, therefore increasing circulation throughout the body.
*Cleans the circulatory system.
*Reduces blood pressure on internal organs.
*Provides flushing for the organs and provides a new supply of blood.
*Strengthens the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems.
* Contracts the muscles to eliminate toxins and poisonous wastes.
* Strengthens the mucous membranes, which help resist hay fever, allergies, colds, coughs.
One other benefit I read about on a couple of message boards/websites:
*It makes your hair shinier
So, maybe a broken water heater was a blessing in disguise? I think I'm going to try showering in cold water more often. Not only may it help me feel better, but I will help save the environment AND have shinier hair!!
*Note: on several websites the only disclaimer mentioned for cold showers were the following:
For women: do not take cold shower during your monthly cycle or after the 7th month of pregnancy
For Men: limit exposure of cold to the male organs by wearing shorts or covering with your hand.

This evening Paul and I were laying on the couch taking a nap, and all of the sudden there was a very loud banging at the door! It scared us to death!
It was the maintenance man - strange for him to appear on a Sunday night.
Anyway, he re-lit the pilot light of our water heater, but mentioned that it was old, had a leak, and would need to be replaced. Thankfully, we are currently apartment dwellers, and we don't have to pay for the replacement of a water heater or DO the replacing!
Wooo! I think this calls for a cold shower!

Your drawings help bring the story to life. I guess I may have to try a cold shower myself!
