Updates On My Life

People are starting to rub my belly. Even people I don't know will come up to me and rub my belly and go...
"awww, hello baby!"

I don't really mind the people I know, but strangers? I mean, babies are pretty cool and I'm glad they bring out such happiness in us all, but there are limits people.

I grew out my fingernails to distract from my swelling hands. Now it just looks like you have well manicured sausages coming at you when I reach out to shake your hand.

I took my glucola test on the 16th and it came back a little high. This doesn't necessarily mean I have gestational diabetes. It means I have to go back Tuesday and take the 3-hour glucola test.
The glucola test is a test that most OBGYN's have you take around 24-28wks of pregnancy to determine whether or not you have gestational diabetes. This website explains it well I think if you are interested in reading more about it.

Regardless of the results, we will do what we have to do to grow a happy, healthy baby. This experience has helped me realize I need to do a little better at watching what I eat. We're hoping for the best though - that I am NOT a GD.

Music That Will Get You Psyched To Push

I get this daily newsletter thing from http://www.parents.com/ and it had this list of music playlist you can put together for when you are giving birth. It made me laugh. I think it's a good idea. I wonder if they would let you have this music playing during labor?

“Push It (Ooh, baby, baby)”, by Salt ‘n’ Pepa
"Wind It Up” and “Hollaback Girl”, by Gwen Stefani
“I’m Every Woman”, by Whitney Houston
“Take Your Mama”, by Scissor Sisters
“Harder to Breathe”, Maroon 5
“Rock and Roll”, by Led Zeppelin
“Rock Your Body”, by Justin Timberlake
“I Will Survive”, by Gloria Gaynor
"Born to Run," by Bruce Springsteen
"Ain't No Other Man," by Christina Aguilera
"Shining Star," by Earth Wind & Fire
"Kids in America," by Kim Wilde

Prepping For Baby

Paul and I have been trying to get things ready for the baby. We still have a ways to go, but we know she will be here before we know it so we must prepare. Time goes by so quickly!

So, I guess it's the "in" thing to register for baby gifts. Everyone at work keeps asking me where Paul and I are registered. I guess some of the people I work with are giving me a baby shower later on in my pregnancy. I thought that was pretty darn nice of them. I wasn't really expecting anything like that because all of our family is in other states.

I've never registered for anything. I know people do it for weddings sometimes. I have a friend who is getting married on Saturday who is registered at 4 different stores! With an invitation list of over 200, I hope they get all that their little hearts desire. When Paul and I were married we just asked that people give us gift cards or cash if they wanted to give us anything since we'd be driving to Tennessee that night. It worked out pretty well. We didn't even think about registering anywhere. We did just fine with one pan and one bowl for the first year or so of our marriage.

So Paul and I have spent the last couple of weekends registering at Babies r Us and Target. Babies R Us is pretty cool because they give you a list of things that they think you will need. Of course, half of those things really AREN'T necessary to raise a baby child (I like to call Madeline my little "baby child" sometimes cause it's fun to say and life is all about having fun) so you have to distinguish what you REALLY do actually need. That can be hard when you have never had a baby before.

Then, they give you that scanner gun. Something inside of you just goes crazy. It is so fun to shoot at the price tag. Paul was in charge of that cause it was a party for him and I like to see him smile. It got sort of annoying though cause he would start shooting at anything I would touch or say "that's cute" to. The nice thing is, you can go back and tweek your list... add or delete stuff. When Paul started talking about scanning in a flat screen TV I knew we were done.

We laughed for a long time about that one.

There are a lot of things on our lists right now that we will probably get ourselves because they're kind of expensive. We just added them because we wanted to be able to come back and reference them. So the lists are not really perfect yet, but we are getting there.

At this point all we really have baby-wise is a couple of outfits we got at Walmart for $1 and some really cute clothes my mom sent us. I have all of my old stuffed animals in Madeline's room. Now we just have to decide on a crib. Cribs are pretty expensive but I think we can find a pretty nice one and a changing table/dresser that we will be able to use with all of our children.

Oh, I did buy a book on Saturday. Many of you have probably read this book before. It's called "Love You Forever" By: Robert Munsch.

I saw it again a couple of weekends ago when I was going to a baby shower for a friend of mine. I arrived at the restaurant early so I decided to spend some time in the bookstore across the street. I went to the children's book section and began looking at all the wonderful children's books they have.

If I were a little kid I would LOVE to go to this place and sit on the tiny little benches surrounded by all the colorful pictures and books everywhere and read all day long. I enjoyed it thouroughly as an adult! I found Love You Forever and started reading it. I started to cry. I stood there, alone in the children's section of a bookstore and bawled my head off because this book is so funny and cute.

Anyway, so I took Paul to the bookstore this past Saturday to show it to him and we sat on a tiny little bench and read it together. I began crying again. So, there we sat, me crying, Paul teary-eyed because I was crying - he would never admit it. We bought the book. It will be one of many little Madeline and future children will read.

You know, one really cool thing about Tennessee is a program Dolly Parton started called Imagination Library. She sends a brand new age appropriate book to every child under the age of 5yrs in our county if you register for it. We are really excited to sign Madeline up for the program once she is born.

At Least She'll Be A Good Listener

Pretty much every night now, I have a dream. This one's short and sweet. I had a dream that my little girl looked EXACTLY like her dad, but she had blue eyes and really red hair. She was outside playing and I grabbed her to look at her face. I thought... "wow, she is so cute!". Then I noticed her ears... all 10 of them. She had 6 on one side and 4 on the other.

5.09.2008

Eeeeeek!

I had two of the most awful baby dreams last night. I will try to describe the horror in words... if I had time I'd draw you a picture so you could truly understand, but I should probably just leave that one alone.

Before I go into this, I don't watch scary movies. Ever. Paul and I decided a long time ago that scary movies were... well, stupid. They scare us! We dislike being scared and being made to feel on edge in that manner. Besides, who wants bad dreams? Not us!

Now I do see several surgeries a day. It has never really bothered me seeing all the things that I see because it is a job and most of these people who are having these surgeries may have no other choice and NEED this help, and I am there to help and protect them.

Okay. So the first dream was about stretchmarks. I have been reading in my Motherhood and Maternity nursing books lately because they have pictures and they tell you the facts - unlike someone other "what to expect" books that sugar coat stuff and leave out stuff - the details someone like me needs when it comes to me and my body. In my nursing books there are pictures of different big pregnant bellies with stretchmarks. Some are slight some are unbelievable!! I can understand that it might look THAT BAD though with how little some women are and how big some babies can be.

So in the dream I look down at my belly and I have some very light, almost undetectable stretchmarks. All the sudden, one of them starts to buldge out a little and pulsate. Then it turns red. It starts blowing up a little like a balloon. Then all the sudden my entire belly breaks out into this watermelon striped mess... except the stripes are not nice and green like a watermelon, they are rigid and dark brown and red and they almost look like coffee grounds.

THEN!!! I'm looking down at them and all the sudden I realize.... THESE ARE NO STRETCH MARKS!!! MY STOMACH IS CRACKING OPEN!!!!! Not only can I see all my intestines and guts - and from my job I know what these things look like - but as I peer into my stomach, I see a baby. Actually, it's a baby's face. The baby is bald, not fully grown yet, and it is looking up at me with this expression that looks as if to say,

"Hey, what are you looking at. What are you? Where am I? I'm not ready!!!"

Then I look over to my right... there is ANOTHER BABY!!! It has the same look on it's face.
So then I am freaking out, trying to hold my abdomen together so these babies don't die. All the sudden I am outside at the house I grew up at in Utah. I am wearing a button up shirt and some high heels, no pants, and I am bleeding as I run into my old house and into my old bedroom. There are clothes everywhere. I stand there in fear.

Then I wake up cause the cat was scratching at the door.

WHOA huh??!! I know! FA-REEEEEEAKYY!

So then I go back to sleep. This one is not as long, promise.

This time I am with my family. It's around Christmas and we decided to go to the mall. I have a 2 month old baby boy with me. He's really cute, but I keep misplacing him and finding him in weird places. Then all the sudden, I see Shawna and her entire family at some restaurant!! Even Grandma! I am so happy to see them I jump over the table we are at. The waiter lunges toward me as if to contain my excitement, but he can't. Shawna and her family are leaving. They don't see me. I yell at the waiter.
"Those are my friends!!! Move!!!!!!!!"
And he's like,
"Ma'am, you cannot behave this way. This is a fine establishment and you blah blah blah...."
I'm not listening.

So I run out the restaurant leaving my baby to catch them and I yell Shawna's name. She turns! I remember I have a baby in the restaurant and I need go get him. So I go back. Shawna comes to see me. We're talking and as I go to pick up my baby I see that he is now the size of a fat 13-year-old boy.
He's still 2 months old and he looks like a 2 month old baby would, but he is gigantic!! I cant lift him because it would be like picking up a 280lb man.

That was that one.

I have had other dreams that aren't as fresh in detail. So many I could write a book. Maybe I will. Of course, no one else really cares about the dreams I am having. I'd love to take these to a dream interpreter or something. I wonder if there is any meaning to these dreams.

I am not pregnant with twins by the way. There is definitely only one little lady in there.

Uh Oh

I'm not able to do what I used to be able to do... I am realizing this. This past weekend at work my body decided that it would just MAKE me stop to rest. If I were having a conversation with my body this past weekend, it would have gone something like this...

Me: "Hey Body... we need to go to work for a 4th day in a row"

My Body: "Ya know, Edith, I REALLY don't think that's a good idea. You've worked two 12-hour shifts in a row and you came in Saturday... me and the baby need a rest."

Me: "Well, I am on call and if I get called in I have to go cause it would be an emergency case!"

My body: "You didn't sleep very well last night though, and you have been having those pains in your back, abdomen, and special place - that, by the way, no one tells you about until it's too late."

Me: "Hi. I am dumb. I am going to ignore you because I think I am Super woman!"

I got called in and short version... I over did it. I didn't drink enough water. I didn't get a break for 3 1/2 hours because I was the only nurse there. By the end of the case I rolled my patient into recovery and RAN to the bathroom. After I emptied my bladder the pains began.

I could not walk, literally. I sat down for a while, it just got worse. My supervisor comes in and says,
"Oh... Dr. Poopy Pants just called, he has a hip to do. Also, Dr. Whoopity Doo called we have a woman with an embolus in her arm, you need to go do that case now."

Me: BAWLING MY HEAD OFF "I can't move! I need a break! I can't walk."

Thankfully, another nurse had been called in due to the immense number of cases being added to the board and she took over for me for a minute so I could take a break.

All in all, the pain stayed. My boss wanted to take me to the ER but instead settled for me calling my OB doctors answering service to see what they wanted me to do. They wanted me to go to the ER at the hospital where we are having the baby. Paul came to get me and took me down his car in a wheelchair. The pain was subsiding so we decided that since I had no blood, no wierd stuff, and I was feeling better that we would put off going to the ER so we could pay $100 for some one to tell us to go home and put my feet up, drink water, and rest.

I layed around all day. I layed around all day yesterday. Today is my day off... I am feeling SO MUCH BETTER!!

Lesson learned: I am NOT super woman. I am a soon to be mother who needs to take better care of herself and her Madeline. It takes a lot out of you to grow a person! I'm talking to my boss tomorrow about working every-other-day and lightening my load.

P.S. Madeline is moving! Every day I feel her. Mostly in the morning and at night. I can't wait for Paul to feel it.

It's A Girl!!

Today was my 20 week ultra sound! Everything looked perfect - she is healthy and all her parts are working properly. Yes, I said "her"... we found out we are having a little girl!!! I am so happy I cannot wipe this perma-grin off of my face.

We're still deciding on names... So far our favorites (and the names I have dibs on) are:
Madeline Elizabeth
Madeline Olivia
Madeline Sue
Lilian (Lily) Elizabeth

I also like the names Lucy, Molly, Iris, and Violet... Of course we still have about 20 weeks to make that decision and really we won't truly know her name until we see her.

Here are some pictures. You can click on them to get a better look if you want. We also got a video of the ultra sound but I am not sure what format it is in and I can't get it to work so Paul is gonna have to do that for me when he gets home.

Here she is just hangin' out...
I thought this was a pretty cute profile picture so I blew it up a little.

A better view of her profile. She is beautiful!!

This is the crotch shot. It's definitely a girl!

Here she is again...

and again...

Look at her wittle feet!

She loves working out.
This is her doing the "bicycle kick". She's upside down pumpin' those legs.

Ever since I found out I was pregnant I had a feeling I was having a little girl. I have been excited, but now things are so much more real. I feel an enormous bond with my little girl and I am starting to feel like I've known her for a really long time. This feeling is indescribable. I am overjoyed!

What In The World Is Happening??

Well, I will tell you!

1. I turned 30 on April 8th! Thirty! I remember when I was a kid and I would think... "I wonder where I will be when I am 30?" I never imagined I would be where I am today. I love my life though. Hmph. Goofy! Life is so goofy!

2. I am working on eliminating my second cold of the pregnancy. I was sick in March for a week. Took a week or two off from being sick, and then we had some visitors who were sick and bam!! I caught another one. But, it's okay! This is going to be the last cold so help me. I am sick of being sick! I have coughed so ferociously, so many times, the baby will probably not like rollercoasters when it is older. Let me put it this way... I could be CEO of "Phlegm Factory". Our logo would be... "Hawck Patooey... we've got gooey!".

3. I am 19 weeks pregnant today. Paul and I find out next Monday whether or not we are having a baby boy or a baby girl! We even get a DVD of it so I will try to upload it or something.

4. I have a sewing machine! paul's parents got me a sewing maching and a karaoke machine for my birthday- both of which I love. I am going to be a sewing machine myself now that I have a sewing machine. Paul got me the most awesome swing for the back porch. He is currently in the works at putting it together. I am very excited!!

5. Kitty has a boyfriend. He visits her every night at the back door. He's all grey... pretty handsome. He will NOT be spending any alone time with kitty though. Not while she lives under this roof. Nah... she will live by our rules! I'm just practicing for being a parent. Pretty good huh?

6. My email has been whacky lately. I've tried to send out some emails to different people and they keep getting returned. Anyway - Shawna, did you get my email about the name on your blog? And Julie, hello girl! It is so awesome to hear from you! I hope you got my second attempt at emailing you. And just a side note - Kam, you are so cool. Thanks for always leaving comments on my blog. Many read... and then click away. But not you... you go the extra mile and leave a comment. You rock.

7. Work is good. I cut my shift down to 3 12's a week so I have more time to rest at home. I think it will be best.

8. I am obsessed with popsicles. I love them.

More entertaining and creative blogs to come.

Today...

Things here are good. I bought a new shampoo - herbal essence for LONG hair. My hair is getting longer so I figured it was warranted. It's in the red bottle and it smells really good.

Today I am 17 weeks along. 4 months, 1 week. I am very happy and excited. Three more weeks and we get to see the babe again on ultra sound and find out if it's a lad or a lass.

Work is going fine. Same ol' same ol' really. The human body really is quite gross and stinky. We took a 7.5 pound ovary out of a woman today. I like to come home and tell Paul about my day. I am sure Paul doesn't like me talking about projectile diarrhea over dinner, but it's what's happened during my day! What does he want?

Happy Birthday Mindy Lou, my dear childhood friend. I hope today is a magnificent day for you!

Certificate

I came across this little award last week when Paul and I were organizing our files. It's a very special certificate that was granted to me in 2005 by the Adoring Mothers Association (AMA). It was presented to me, Edith Ann, in recognition of my "valuable contributions to the entire world as we know it." Signed by my mother and apparently the Pope.

The Adoring Mothers Association is an association run soley by my mother, Susan. The AMA or American Medical Association is an association of physicians dedicated to the health of America and although these two associations share initials, they had no relation. And although it would be cool, no, the actual pope did not sign my certificate.

Update

I spent all last week trying to overcome a cold... yea, I got the cold Paul had. I tried everything not to catch it (wiped down things with clorox wipes, refrained from hugs & kisses, etc.). It's harder to overcome a cold when you are pregnant because you don't want to take anything that might harm the baby. Also, your body has more circulating volume so your phlegm production is quadrupled. Yummy! Anyway, I am on the very tail-end of it now and almost 100% again.

Things are going great with the pregnancy. I'm 16 weeks along (yesterday). Our last visit with the doctor went well. I don't have to take the blood pressure meds she prescribed last month. Paul and I took my BP for a month morning, noon, and night and documented it to take to our next visit. It was fine, so she agreed it wasn't necessary. Phew! Our next doctor's appointment is April 21st when we will have our ultra sound to determine if we are having a girl or a boy! I am very excited.
Sometimes I feel pregnant, sometimes I don't. Sometimes my stomach feels huge and I can feel hardness really easily and other times it's so soft I wonder if I am just fat. I am truly looking forward to having a pregnant belly. I say that to my friends and family and they usually say,

"Oh, you say that now, but when you have one you will wish you didn't"
and I think...
"No, I really am excited. I will be excited then. what are you talking about ya goof?" I don't actually say that though. Just think it.

The house is looking more and more like a home. We really love it. We got our bedroom set finally last Friday and it is awesome!! The bed is extremely comfortable. We bought a fake down comforter that is really soft and these pillows that apparently stay cool. They are pretty nice.

Kitty is adjusting to sleeping downstairs pretty well. We were upstairs in the guest room until our bed set came and she really became used to it. She still naps up there sometimes. I am slowly trying to get her away from that room cause I don't want her bugging our guests.

Nostril Sauce

Paul still has a cold. He is in the "my nose is a faucet" phase. So we were putting some shredded paper in a garbage bag just a minute ago and I said...

"oops your nose is dripping"

and he says,
"I know, come on lets just finish"

and I said,
"You should go wipe your nose. Get a tissue"

So he grunts and does a heavy sigh and starts walking toward to bathroom and I say,
"Don't drip that nostril sauce anywhere," and we laughed... pretty hard.

It was a funny moment that I thoroughly enjoyed and thought I'd share with the world.

3.13.2008

Good Times

Good news! No throw up since last time AND the blood blisters are slowly disipating and going away.

Today for the first time, I feel tight in my belly and I feel hardness - it's a constant feeling. Very interesting and cool!!! I can't wait for my belly to get bigger! I am so happy!!!

Paul is sick. My dear adorable man has a bit of a head cold. Don't worry, I will take good care of him. I am a nurse.

Happy Birthday to my dear friend Sha-naw-na Leigh!! I am thinking of you and hope you had/have an amazing day today!!

Pop Goes My Head

So last night Paul and I were sitting down to a delicious dinner of baked potatoes, steak, and salad. We had just began when I took a first bite of my potato. It was a bit cold because it took longer for the steak to cook. Previous to taking this bite, I had smelled the bacon ranch dressing I put on my salad to make sure it was still good. Also while cooking the steak, I had a couple nibbles of it so it could have been any of the three that was the cause of what shortly followed.

My mouth began to water and I bolted to the nearest bathroom. I drooled profusely into the toilet and proceeded to puke. This is the first time I have actually puked during my pregnancy. I have been nauseated several times, but this was the first puke. I puked so hard that I felt as if someone was strangling me and forcing my throat up into my mouth. My eyes felt as if they were about to explode each time I heaved. When it was over, I even spit some blood out. Not a lot, just small traces. Something must have popped in the midst of all the pressure.

This morning I woke up with broken blood vessels in my eyes and tons of tiny little blood dots around my eyes and along the bottom of my neck under my jaw. THAT is how much pressure I had. It was the most awful throw up I have ever experienced in my life. Needless to say, I did not eat my dinner. I feasted on some unsalted bland saltine crackers and water the rest of the night. I pray to God this never happens again.

No more potatoes, sour cream, ranch, or steak. Check!

Andie McDowell & The Colonel

This morning we woke up to clear blue skies and snow covered everything. We HAD to take advantage of this oppertunity. When would we ever get to play in the snow again living here? I know snow is like water to all of my Utah friends and family, but living here for over six years now has really caused our hearts to ache for a snowy day like Paul and I both had when we were kids. So, we played...

Here's the beginning

This is Paul. The almighty creator. I helped a little but he did most of the work while I tossed snowballs at his bum and took pictures.

This is me and Andie McDowell

And this is Paul and Colonel Jessop, who can't handle the truth.

Icicles... on OUR house. Cool!

A snow angel for my momma.
